Michael, I just rang Bobby Shew, who knew Mendez. He thinks it's Hungarian and possibly a girl's name (Kate?). If that's the case, what she did to get her name immortalised in this way is anyone's guess! I'm fairly sure it's based on one of the lesser known Hungarian Dances by Brahms, but beyond that we're not certain. Jim Davies might know a little more. He used to play it very convincingly when I was with B & R. John McLoughlin P.S.: Bobby is playing with the Wigan Youth Jazz Band (previous BBC Big Band of the Year) at 12:00 this coming Sunday. In the evening (8.00 PM) he's playing in Bury, Lancashire. I'll try to confirm precise details within the next 24 hours, along with other venues in London and Dublin, before he returns to the US. For anyone who wants to hear a World-class jazz trumpeter / flugel player (ex Tommy Dorsey, Maynard Ferguson Band, lead trumpet Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, ex-session player on hundreds of albums, films, TV shows, etc.), try to get to hear him live. I've primed him over the last few years on brass bands and he loved it when he came along to a Besses rehearsal a couple of years ago. Visit his web-site, if you can't get along to any of his gigs. It's on www.bobbyshew.com. --
