If the dreaded black spots are near to any soldered joint (this includes the edge of the bell, which contains a soldered-in reinforcing wire), this is caused by flux from the soldering operation "weeping" out over time (beneath the lacquer). I know that manufacturers do go to some length to "flush out the flux" but clearly not far enough! On another gripe, can anyone tell me which page of Encyclopaedia Britannica describes how to replace the spring on cornet third valve triggers? I held a street party the last time I succeeded. Now I just keep replacing the elastic bands! At Wigan Jazz Festival this year I was reassured to see that Dennis Noday - a world-class jazz trumpeter - uses exactly the same low-tech. solution.
