You may remember I recently sent an email about problems with spots on laquer and how after a year and 2 euphoniums Besson still haven't sorted the problem. The saga continues........... After after 2-3 months in Besson and another 3 weeks "missing" in the post, my brand new silver plated replacement euph. arrived yesterday. This is Besson's 3rd attempt to get it right. And did they? Problems are as follows (dealer asked me to make a list) Back of 3rd valve very badly scratched, and as is nearby tubing. Back of 2nd valve scratched, as is 1st to a lesser extent Chips and blisters on rim of bell Excess soldering on seams Polish (?) still on instrument in places. Lyre box packed with polish. Inside of some slides are partly plated and has visibly lifted and is peeling. Roughness and scratching on surface on various parts of instrument. Scratching also visible on thickest tube nearest 4th valve Spare valve caps and "rubber inserts" look grimy and used. Besson logo and serial number is not very clear. Suspect this instrument has been re-plated. From the moment the box was opened I had the impression this was not a new instrument. While polished (mostly), it did not have the "mirror" finish you expect on a brand new instrument. To add insult to injury, one of our trombones has developed laquer bleed. It's a Besson. I have been on to the dealer, (Norman's in Cardiff) and apparently they've hammered out a deal with Besson. In future Besson will arrange for collection of all faulty instrument directly from the owner, and will not collect the old instrument until they are ready to repair / replace it, which will remove the normal 3 month wait. Here's an easier and cheaper solution. Get it right in the first place. William Dee --
