I don't know about whether the sweat is more acidic, more alkaline or just
smellier, but it is imho an indisputable fact that some people "lift" the
lacquer on instruments and some people don't. I played a new baritone
(there! I've admitted it now!) for 12 months or so and didn't take any of
the lacquer off. The instrument was then passed to another player who
started reacting with it within a few weeks. It could be quantity rather
than chemical composition, most likely it's a combination of both. Are you
a Sweaty Betty, Carol?!

Having said all that, I have lifted a bit of the lacquer on my flugel (which
I have had for about six or seven years). It's the bit on the very end of
the 2nd valve slide, where my sweaty palm sits...

H&K,
Jud
