That's what we always do. This plan would follow on after a detailed look at the music, and a rearrangement of the percussion parts if that were required. Some contests actually request that this plan be sent to them before the day, but I have no idea why. The problems come when you end up playing on a small stage, or one that is a different shape to the bandroom, and you have to improvise something in the four minutes you are given. I had this problem at Wembley once - we wanted the percussion behind the trombones so that the tubular bells would project better, and it turned out the stage extension wasn't wide enough to put things where we wanted them. We ended up putting some instruments back on the main stage, meaning I had to run about ten feet back from the front of the stage to the back, in about three bars, on a bit of stage about 6 inches wide, in order to get to the gong and bass drum. Good job I had the free bars, really, as I had no chance to check the music when setting up... Tim Sawyer Percussion Rothwell Temperance Band http://www.rtb.org.uk --
