As I remember the piece was 'Lowry Sketch Book' (Philip Wilby) and at the Midlands Area there was one band who played the part (not a short part either) on a proper Marimba. The rest of us played it on the lower-end of the Xylophone, which didn't sound bad was wasn't right. Trouble is, if all bands play it on Xylophone and the odd one actually have a Marimba, then they have an unfair advantage on the rest of us! Just a thought - if a BBA chooses to allow a Xylophone in place of a Marimba, then surely they should insist that a Xylophone be used (i.e. it is an official change to the test piece, not just a 'let you off with') such that financially over equipped bands don't have an advantage.
