John. Happy New Year !   I think you will find it virtually impossible to
get "modern tunes" for a small ensemble; at least I have been unable to get
any duet music like that....although I think there would be a big demand
from young brass players (schools, etc.)   There is a quite of lot of pieces
supplied for small groups and I would suggest you send for catalogues from
Music Exchange, Manchester,; Spartan Press Ltd.,Old Brewery House, Redbrook,
Monmouth HP5 4LU; the Power Music series seem to have a few things for
quartets, quintets, and ten piece ensemble (Fascinating Rhythm, Bill Bailey,
etc (for four)).  Headline Music Production, of 125 Milcote Road, Bearwood.
Warley, West Midlands. B.67 5BQ also seem to have some things for small
groups (but the sextets sound a bit heavy).    Let me know if you need any
'phone numbers.   If you have any "modern" tunes for whole band why not pick
out the melody, alto and tenor parts for a few players.  I know it sounds
daft but a pal and I (yes....two old retired geezers !) have just done six
carol concerts mainly using the Salvation Army Hymn books (over 800) 1st and
2nd cornet parts, and New Christmas Praise books...using Melody and Alto
parts.    Seemed to go alright too.....just had to dodge the odd stale mince
pie and empty beer bottle when the audience woke up.    Altogether we have
done 12 concerts (some for over an hour) this year (for nowt of course) and
next month are doing a parish church service, and a 50 year birthday party
for the town's elderly association (probably younger than us !).   If there
are any other "seasoned" retired bandsmen out there needing some
encouragement to "get blowing" again...please get in touch.    Its hard
going on duets.....but at least we don't have to go to contests !    Cheers.
