Re: Tuning/Intonation (was keep things right between Sop and Rep)

Graham

Thanks for the prompt response.

I wholeheartedly agree with tuning up on each rehearsal. I do use a tuner as
it is a totally independent and incontrovertible form of establishing the
pitch. The down side with a tuner is that is does not take into account the
tone produced by a player. I hope that you would agree with me that it is
possible to have a player with a quite flat or sharp sounding tone but which
is, in fact, in tune. I tend to allow that instrument to be adjusted a
fraction to compensate for this. To return to the point however, I was trying
to say that it should be encouraged that all the players use their ears and
recognise when there are tuning problems. It is not always practical for the
conductor to address the problem constantly. Incidentally I do take on board
what Dave Buckley said about keeping the tuning uppermost but that cannot
take over the whole rehearsal.

As far as intonation is concerned I am not advocating ignoring the problem.
Rather that the problem be handled with some thought and sensitivity.
Encourage players to provide positive comments that will assist rather than
hinder the resolution of the problem.

Having a drink together is great and to be encouraged.
