Hi Tony, Variations on a Shining River was the test-piece for the area contests in 1981 I believe. Many bands thought that it was too easy but in fact it caught several bands out. It was a piece that required a lot of subtlety and that often made it difficult to rehearse. Bands are happier, in my experience, when things are fast and loud. GUS won the Midlands Area (directed by me) by a margin of 5 points. GUS also recorded the piece and I believe that it has now been transferred from LP to CD.
