Concert announcement!

Hi there listee's,

Just got back from a concert given by the Brass Band Winter School at
Silsoe College, Bedfordshire this afternoon. Wow - what a line up. The
audience had the pleasure of seeing what might arguably be the best
array of soloistic talent in the movement.

Simone Rebello - percussion, Matthew Baker and Roger Webster on cornet,
Sandy Smith on tenor horn, Nick Hudson on trombone, Robert Childs on
euphonium and Steve Sykes on tuba! They were all on fine form - but I
must make particular mention of a marimba solo by Simone based on the
hymn tune Abide With Me - sheer delight to listen to.

The band, under Roy Newsome, played really well too - and I'm sure I
spotted at least one listee playing away - scary really! The band's big
item was The Year Of The Dragon by Philip Sparke of which the band gave
an assured performance - but - as ever, it was 'that' middle movement
that was the highlight for me. This movement is a trombone player's
dream and Nick Hudson was free to produce a performance, (without the
hindrance of pandering to an adjudicator), that was nearer to Gershwin
than Sparke, and IMHO, all the better for it. Roy Newsome managed to
extract some moments of real musical inspiration from this band.

Anyway, if there are any listee's within striking distance of the
Midlands next weekend you might be interested in coming to a concert by
the GUS Band. The concert is next Sunday, January 16th. at Bedworth
Civic Hall, (Box Office 01203 376707), and will introduce Bedworth Brass
during the second half. For those that like to know these things I have
listed the programme below - but suffice to say that The Big Chap and I
will be once again 'firing' from the same section. If you do come -
introduce yourselves to us and say hello.
