Re: Oz Nationals - Alcohol

Monkey,

Thanks for the comments on editorial in last issue of Australia's Band
World.

For the information of the list, this was our comment on the NBC edict
regarding alcohol at National Championships:

"THE warning from NBC president Ross Heinze on behavior at National
championships is a timely reminder of the social responsibilities and
levels of respect required and expected in the band movement.
We don=92t want abuse being hurled at organisers - they are only doing th=
eir
job. Don=92t make the task harder.
We don=92t want drunks interrupting presentation ceremonies. The prestige=
 of
a crowning moment should not be tarnished.
We want respect for the great band movement in this country.
But do we want a sterile contesting environment at the National
championships each year? An environment where opportunities for social
interaction and fellowship are limited. An environment where the needs of
competitors and supporters - and this may include the consuming of alcoho=
l
and cigarettes - are not catered for.
There appear to be a great many people involved in the band movement who
enjoy heading off for a drink with friends and acquaintances once a year
at
the Nationals.
We have long advocated in this column the need to make our Nationals a
greater social event. People who have attended the New Zealand Nationals
can only marvel at are how well the social needs are met and respected by
those present.
The NBC is quite justified on its =93big-stick=94 approach to inappropria=
te
behavior at the Nationals.
But we would like to think that the threat of fines and disqualification
is
not the only way of removing a problem.
Contest organisers should consider the off-stage needs of competitors and
supporters at major events for our band movement."

I also add that there was no public or visible disruption of the
presentation ceremony at the 1999 event - or for that matter an years
previously. There was however a problem at the side of stage between
organisers and some band officials.
