Well said David. How did you meet Birtwistle? I had lessons with him for a while and he took me out for the best Chinese I ever had. Still think that one of the best works for band is Grimethorpe Aria. There are loads of quality composers around at the mo. that the band movement could use. James Macmillan and Thomas Ades immediately spring to mind as writers of music that's accessible. And what about John Adams (USA)? Surely this would be better for all of us than having to play another rehashed test piece (starts loud, lots of boring cadenzas and ends, oh so predictably loud)? --
