Are we talking about the same piece?  Last time I rehearsed this a
disproportionate amount of time went on getting the trombone
parts in the second movement right: playing together, playing in
tune, phrasing, balance etc.  The section  improved as a
consequence, not just in their ability to play the one piece but in
the skills they had developed as players, which is for me one of the
big plusses of preparing for contests.  I agree that lots of rests =
not a great way to spend your time but it certainly helps when there
are nice sounds to listen to.  Have you been playing the expurgated
version?

PS I think the cornet cantilena over those trombone chords is pure
magic and the cadenza is the only way it could possibly end.   Can I
claim my pint?
