There's no point. The file written to the CD will be the same size whatever
the size of the file on your hard drive, and by converting to mp3 you *will*
lose some quality. WAV files also appear to be roughly the same size as the
track when it is finally written to CD, so 600Mb or so of WAVs should fit on
a single CD.

If you don't want to play the file back in a "proper" CD player, then by all
means MP3 it then write it as a computer file (not a music file) to the CD.
This will only be replayable in a computer CD player, using the appropriate
player software.
