Peter, I'm proud to say that I've been with my band for over 22 years now. During that time we slipped back from top A grade to medium B grade (not because of me I hope) but now we worked back to within striking distance of A grade again. At one point we dropped down to 17 players and sometimes I felt like leaving but now I'm glad I didn't. What amazes me is the number of players who leave, come back leave again and so on. Every band has cycles but there is nothing more gratifying than still being there when your band pulls out of a slump and starts winning again or, for the non- contestants amongst us, just starts playing better. Good MDs are essential to that process but the potential has to be there within the band. On another topic, all this recent prattle about fees and reimbursements etc. irritates me somewhat. I've never been paid anything by any band I've been a member of. Perhaps I've been in the wrong bands but it isn't the norm down here as far as I'm aware. It's cost me (and lots of others) hundreds of dolllars just to play in our bands as a hobby. We do it because we love it, not because we get paid for it. Perhaps that's what's wrong with amateur bands? Roy, Solo Euph, Dandenong Band, Melbourne, Australia.
