Adrian, the obvious answer to that is, no they aren't. However, as I said in a recent posting, the reality amongst many bands (apart from the very best) is that the intensity of rehearsals fluctuates depending on the significance of the event. Its usually the contests where the most intensive and detailed rehearsal is done, simply because the bands are being adjudicated, rather than listened to for pure enjoyment. As a result, that attention to detail lifts the band's standard, therefore the next concert is "usually" of a better standard than had the band had not recently competed. I'm not saying thats what "should" be the norm, but simply that its a reality with the average amateur band which often struggles to attract and keep good players. Success at contests can lift moral immensely, just as continued failure can damage moral. Somewhere inbetween perhaps?? Cheers, Roy, Principal Eupho, Dandenong Band, Melbourne, Australia.
