Dear List, It seems to me that paranoia rules I'm afraid. But, in the sense of suddenly being thrust into a new venue, with no idea of what the band will sound like to YOU as a player and how well or badly you will hear your colleagues, it's very off-putting to suddenly feel as though you're sitting on top of the trombones or as if your FF is only PP. How many bands have stage curtains above their normal playing area? Go on. Own up! Some of us have to practice in bathrooms at home and prefab Nissen huts for rehearsals - don't tell me the difference in sound quality isn't noticeable, especially when you're all keyed up for a contest. Who would like to be able to play in the contest venue at least once before the big day? Me for one. Unfortunately it's not practicable. Mike mentions playing in a church as a prelim. Nice idea, but I've never yet encountered a church, especially a large one, that even approaches the warmth of an adjudicator's heart. (If heaven's that cold I'm not going). Most contest venues I've played in have been hotter than hell on wheels. It plays havoc with the grip. Any thoughts? --
