Hi Colin, Saw your note and got to thinking, what about those bands that regularly appear at contest venues? i.e. top bands at the major contests RAH/Symphony Hall/Corn Exchange and local bands at traditional contest venues (Leamington & Corby (historically) come to mind). How do you factor the "advantage" the experience of those players that regularly contest in these surroundings? If you've been banding for a number of years, you surely get a feel for your playing environment, from carols in the streets on a cold Christmas evening, the dire surroundings/acoustics of the Nottingham Conference centre to the sweet resonance of Symphony Hall. In this regard, perhaps the truest contest was the Open at the new Bridgewater Hall in Manchester a couple of years ago, where nobody could claim any "advantage". Well played Marple. John Farmer BBb P.s. Bankss at the RAH for "New Jerusalem". Ian Perry, principal cornet. During the opening solo passage, someone backstage opens a door and Ian's music flutters on the stand. How the hell he kept his composure, I'll never know, but that's just banding, contests and all. --
