Hi List! I really didn't want to get involved in this discussion for fear of what fate it may bring to the band I have only recently become a member of. However, this is what happened to us and I wondered what other people on the list thought. On hearing that you could hire Burton Town hall for a rehearsal, our secretary did just that and a date was set. I would like to point out that the band is not sponsored but we believed that the cost of hiring the hall (=A380) was worth it. After all, one jumble sale would raise this amount! Days later our secretary received a phone call from a member of NEMBBA saying that it was an "un-written rule" that bands did not rehearse in the contest venue, and that they thought it was despicable that we were going to do this. Friends of the band advised us to cancel the rehearsal, although most of the band wanted to go ahead. We didn't want to jeopardise all our hard work towards the area by being disqualified on the day (which was our fear). Reluctantly, it was cancelled and alternative arrangements were made. Personally, I can't really see what the problem is. It would have given the band a feel for the hall, nothing else. I realise that bands who couldn't rehearse in the hall may see it as an unfair advantage, but if you think about it, is it really? If the band went to the area and got a good result would it be because of that single 2 hour rehearsal, or the weeks of practice and a good performance on the day? This is my own opinion on the situation and I hope I don't get myself or our band into any trouble for it. On a lighter note I enjoy going to the area contest and seeing everyone you don't speak to for the rest of the year!!!! I'm looking forward to the change of venue (as I'm sure everyone is), especially going to the bar without having to negotiate the 'mud-slide'! Good luck to everyone at the weekend - see you in the bar! Amanda Newstead --
