In the US there are bands that specialise in band
music of the Civil War Era. One that I have heard
the "Saxton Cornet Band " plays exclusively on
period instrument AND mouthpieces.All of their instruments
were made prior to 1865. They play from hand
copied music that is copied in the exact style of the originals.
The instruments include over the shoulder basses, baritones etc .
Instead of a Bb Cornet as solo cornet the band uses 2 Eb cornets.
These are rotary valve instruments. I had the opportunity to
try one and it was quite different from modern instruments.
The sound the musicians produced was perfectly in tune and very sweet.
They played marches and Rossini overtures etc.
It was a revelation. People play instruments.
Good players make music. The sound was instantly recognisable
as a "brass band" just a lighter tonal quality that was very attractive.
