David don't go. The strength of the movement lies in its depth and its breadth of both performance and personalities. I know it seems as if contesting is the only thing on peoples' minds but IMHO nothing quite stirs the blood as much as stepping on to a contest stage and at times this can overshadow everything else the band does. But this is the areas "season" after all. However, there's also nothing like getting the applause from an appreciative audience. And don't forget the likes of Whit Friday. Yes, bands don't perhaps pay enough attention to concert work but the effort and focus which comes about from contesting can take over. It is worth it though because that sort of work does pay off. I know with my own band that as we have "climbed the ladder" contesting wise our public performances have improved immeasurably. Confidence and general playing standads have improved. Also we realise that being on a concert stage for us is all part of banding and goes hand in hand with contesting. It's NOT all about contesting - perhaps it just seems that way. Please reconsider - your postings are always good. --
