No, I think it is more to do with it being the Area Contest season.

As for the bar, one of the enjoyable aspects of the Area contest is the
opportunity to socialise with other banders, people who you only see a
couple of times a year, and in general, the focal point for this socialising
is the bar.  So in the context of area contest venues, it is relevant and
worthy of a mention.

Our band does not exist to contest - we only do 1 or 2 a year.  We set much
more store on our public concert performances, and on enjoying our time
together at rehearsals.  But despite this, it does hurt being kicked in the
doo-dahs when you have worked hard at something.

Why don't you hang in there, and just delete the messages that don't
interest you?  The list can always do with a broad spectrum of opinions to
give it interest and balance.
