Jacque:  The Salvation Army has traditionally started their players at the
age of 7 or older.  Probably some exceptions, but...  The only concern that
I could see for those that say "don't start until..."  is possibly the
child's teeth.  Once adult teeth start to come in the shape of their
mouth/embouchure will likely change and this may cause problems.

There may be other reasons, and I would be interested in hearing them.
