When To Start Playing Sop?

My son is 9 and has been playing cornet for 18 months and plays in our
junior band.

He is continually asking to play Sop (after seeing  & hearing the Sop
player in our senior band)

He loves playing high (up to C/D above the stave) although I do try to
make him warm up first.

Is it best to start early and get used to the instrument or is it easy
enough to swap at a later date?
