I think the problem with the oversized 4th section has reared its head at
every area in the country.  However, it only seems to have become a real
problem this year.  Many normally non-contesting bands appear to have been
motivated to play in the areas due to the prize at stake - qualification to
play at the RAH.  Although this has created some difficulties this year,
with the problem of accurately choosing the best 3 bands from 30-odd
entrants, I feel that next year the numbers may drop back to their usual
level.

Although many see the increase in band entrants as a problem, shouldn't we
also be glad that this may be a sign that the 'brass band movement' is not
yet dying out?
