Kees,
I've been playing horn in a stage/swing/jazz band. We can only play at the
biggest hotels or for the VERY rich private parties because no one else can
afford to pay a 22-piece dance band for four hours of playing. Most of our
engagements are in Aspen or other affluent communities and do not occur that
often.  The MD more often makes use of 8 or 10 musicians to keep wages up and
costs down.  The rest of the time, I hire myself out to the highest bidder or
stand on street corners with my horn strapped to my back. Needless to say, I
have a "day job" as a professional music teacher and do not depend on my horn
for my livelihood.
