Thank you James for the mention in dispatches.  Of course conducting well is
very difficult...just reading a score vertically makes me dizzy.  I have
actually seen it happen to a band as it is assumed that the solo cornet is
maybe best musician...so automatically takes over.   Some brilliant players
from championship bands cannot conduct....(oh 'ell now I'm for it !).....A
good guy can make a band and many years ago (about 30) I organised a
week-end course with a well-known musician (at that time) and boy did he
make a difference....even to fourth section players....some to this day
still tell me how they enjoyed the experience ...but the bands' m.d.s did'nt
like it and that was that.   No more.      I am glad you enjoyed my little
story....all true, honest.     I have another involving the following.....a
colliery band....an accident.....pubs....a motor cycle.......girl
friend....the police....wedding.  (some 50 years'ago).    But knowing we
have banding friends (I hope) from the police on the lists,  I do not relish
a prison sentence as I am sure they would not allow me to take my instrument
with me for fear of riots.     Cheers.    Dave.
