On the wider issue of SA soloists, perhaps those list members who are not familiar with the quality of playing within some of the SAs best bands should listen to the following CDs released last year: Immortal Themes - Andrew Justice (trom) Lyric Variations - Derick Kane (euph) Golden Slippers - David Daws (cornet) These are all solo albums accompanied by the ISB and demonstrate the quality that does exist in the SA. I play in a (very poor) SA band but enyoy the musical qualities both SA and non SA bands. I have a trip to hear Enfield SA lined up this Saturday (Andrew and David are principles) and Grimethorpe in June, Black Dyke In November and I will be at Birmingham in April. Perhaps we have different music, different objectives and missions, different standards of playing within the SA circle and the non SA circle, but we all strive to advance and promote the brass band so let's stick together and not criticise each others choices. See you at Birmingham - I will be the one with matchsticks in his eyes when the results are announced at 10:00 having left home at around 5:00 am to get there! Incidently, whilst I type this email, I can hear the strains of Brighouse coming from my eldest son's bedroom whilst he goes to sleep. I believe children from non-brass families have stories and nursey rhymes at bed time! Keith --
