Also, what do listees feel is the optimal size for the little hole you stick your thumb thro' ?." Actually, there are a surprising number of models of tambourines. The real high flyers of the timbrelist world choose to play the mark 6 "Ram" model made by Sirquincy Timbrels, Ohio. Tambourines are rated in a series which has the suffix "Ram" after a digit correlating to the number of cymbals and also whether they are in groups of 2, 3 or even 4. The best ones always have a letter associated with the digit as well. (A to G) This tells the timbrelist the relative key the tambourine is best suited to, due to the size of the cymbals - thus the pitch. Actually there is a story about a very famous performer who was an icon among timbrelists who had a reputation for being able to discern the exact make and designation of a tambourine just by the sound. His name is Johnny Marks. In one case he attended an especially lovely performance with his son Johnny Jnr. ) at Wilson Hall. At the conclusion of this concert his son declared that "the tambourine which featured at length in the middle movement of the little known, Jorgensky Bassoon Sonata - "The Untusher Cow" ( a nice piece of "program music" ) was a mark 6 - "G Ram" model with high clandisteens". Johnny Jnr. was always trying to out guess his dad. Unfortunately as usual, he was mistaken. Johnny Marks turned to his son and said in his low drawl : " Wrong on two counts, it was "The Un Tusher Bulls" and it featured an "F Ram Timbrelist, Jnr". With apologies to watchers of late night TV and the old series "The Untouchables" ::) Kees Dogger - my wife didn't laugh either. dogger@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx --
