SA Bands

I think that SA bands have maintained decent standards without contests for
the following reasons (after the first reason, the rest are not necessarily
order of importance):

1) As has been mentioned by Barb, it is a Ministry thing. To quote Enfield
Citadel Bands motto "Ad Optimum - The Best For The Highest"

2) The human pride factor - Nobody likes to commit all their time and effort
to things that stink. You feel better when the group plays well and you
always want to be a part of a 'top' group.

3) Always playing in public - When it comes down too it, the SA corps band
is giving a mini concert every Sunday. The band will play a couple of
numbers before the worship service and then a selection during the service.
It helps get rid of the nerves factor because you are so used to playing in
front of an audience.

4) SA audiences are knowledgeable and inherently critical - Since the brass
band has always been a part of the SA, the congregations have had constant
exposure to the brass band medium. Large numbers of the congregations have
taken part in some form of musical training (vocal or otherwise) at the
corps. They are also familiar with the repertoire (especially the classic
Sunday morning selections) and have no qualms in telling you that "they
heard so-and-so band play it better" or tell you when they know you messed
up.
