As my bandmate (IBB) Barbara Swan says, playing for a greater Judge than
those that are seen at contests has alot to do with it.

It also doesn't hurt that children growing up in the SA often begin playing
their instruments at an eariler age than non-SA children, and that head
start lasts for life.

I'm not SA, but I started on cornet a year earlier than usual (at age 9
instead of 10 or so) and I would say that that has helped me immensely.  My
fiancee is a former SA cornettist, started early, and is now one of the best
cornettists I know  (I'm prejudiced, but that was also some of the
attraction!).
