Andy, I think you've missed the point of Barb's email. Of course SA bandspeople practice to become perfect, and they enjoy being good, but the motivation is different. For the people in SA who are sincere in their faith, and I believe that includes the vast majority of them, working hard on their music is part of their contribution to their worship services. That weekly obligation to perform well is an important factor when as children learning to play they need to be coaxed to practice every day. (Same for adults!) They also have excellent teachers from an early age, and are exposed to great staff band concerts from time to time. In the USA, SA bands are the only organizations in which it feels "normal" to play in a brass band from an early age, and the only place where a kid can assimilate the brass band sound and style when first learning their instrument. Also, in the public schools in the USA, kids are often taught only enough to play their concert band parts, but not the full mastery of their instruments. SA programs are designed to develop all aspects of brass performance. Maybe in the UK it's different, but here in the USA, a lot of kids have never even heard of the Arban book. Just my $.02.
