Here's one to throw back. As a former Salvationist involved in the contesting scene for only the last 2 1/2 years I was discussing contesting with my brother, a Salvation Army officer (minister, for the uninitiated), telling him that contests were just like a S.A. congress music festival except that your band received an official score card. His question, "How do you know that your (S.A.) band didn't receive an official score card?" (I think the good captain was speaking "tongue-in-cheek".) I guess what he means is that a S.A. band doesn't get to play at a congress festival unless they are either top notch or headquarters decides that your division should have some representation this year. I still think the Salvation Army have some fantastic bands, whatever the motivation of either the individual members or the group as a whole. --
