I think a couple of facts have been missing from this recent Stephen Booth 'flaming': 1. How do you know he didn't purchase the domain names with the intention of using them for a business enterprise. He may have now abandoned that idea and is left with the domains for a couple of years - he may just want to give up ownership of something he no longer needs. 2. No mention of price has been made - how do you know he wanted to sell them at a highly inflated price? He may just want to get his money back on the previous investment. 3. Who's to say that someone out there isn't delighted that these domain names are now being made available - they may have been gutted when they saw the 'Unavailable' sign come up when they searched for them, but now they can take advantage of them being openly available again. 4. To stress a point about the financial side of selling domains, it was commented that it only costs 10 to register a domain ..... I'd be delighted to find out where you can register more than one .com domain per household for 10 when the standard registration fee imposed by the US registrar for .com domains is at least $60. On top of that, if an agent had been used for the initial registration it is possible that a service charge and/or a webspace or webforwarding fee was also incurred. 5. As a prime example, I find myself in a situation where I purchased a domain name and webspace with a 'fantastic' business idea .... nothing happened, someone else had already beaten me to it and I'm now left with a domain name and webspace I don't need or want - I didn't purchase it to annoy someone, to intentionally force an inflated sale price, I bought it because it was useful to me ... and now it's not - I'd like to get my money back, and the only way I could do that is to advertise it as being available. I could do this on the site itself, but a sales forum dedicated to selling domain names is one of the more effective routes, or at the very least announcing its availability within an appropriate arena that may have an interest in it. Before everyone tries to black mark someone regarding the sale of domain names, perhaps it is wise to think about all the possible reasons why they may be wanting to sell them. I think as a conclusion to this debate, it may be interesting and educational if Steven Booth could tell us when someone buys any of his domains and how they found out about them being for sale. When we see the result of his endeavours, maybe we can clarify our assumptions on morality issues versus business issues - I think it will all boil down to a matter of supply and demand. BTW, If this mailing has annoyed anyone who may have been interested in coming on the Clacton Band trip to Winschoten on 4th-7th May, please ignore it completely and give me a call straight away!!
