Re Encouraging Junior bands Dear Peter, I play for a Championship section band in Scotland called Unison Kinneil. I am currently solo trombone in the band and am a "product" of the Kinneil Junior Band (1992/1993) as is the 2nd trom player in our band, the solo baritone player and the 2nd cornet player. When we were in the Junior Band we were encouraged by being allowed to sit in on the Senior Band rehersals. Eventually when it was felt that we were good enough, we were allowed to play in concerts with the Senior Band and were gradually intergrated into the band. Being kids at the time this naturally made us feel very important being allowed to play alongside better and more experienced players and it improved our playing greatly. Looking back it must have been very frustrating for the players in the Senior band to have us honking away on our instruments but I think that this policy has been extremely beneficial to the band. Now this same policy is still in operation and seems to be paying off. We try to involve the Junior Band in as much as we can letting them play on marches and inviting them along to contests to hear the band. When we do our annual concert which is usually with Phillip McCann, ex-player of Kinneil!, we involve the Juniors by letting them sell programmes and helping at the interval etc. All in all I think that many people in the band have seen the benefits of having a Junior band and have realised that in the long run it pays to be patient. Hope this have given you some insight into how we work. Fiona Gormley --
