IMHO Endeavour was a good choice for the test. I also strongly suspect it was underestimated by many bands. Sure most should have been able to play the notes. But this left room for musicality to shine through. Eg, not many (in fact only two bands according to the adjudicator) properly stepped the accelerando on the last page over the 80 or so bars it had to run. There were plenty of exposed sections (eg the 1st 36 bars with tubas and the cadenzas.) Some bands thought because it was apparently so easy they should play a highly technical own choice - therefore 3 English Heritages, one Devil and Deep Blue Sea etc. If given my freedom, I would always choose musical pieces to play which are enjoyable to listen to. Brunswick played London Overture which is wonderfully listenable. Essence of Time and Pagannini also were played which I applaud. We played Devil which isn't bad, but too furious and technical for most of its length (which is substantial) to be thoroughly enjoyed. But at least it does have tunes. Overall, it was a pity there was not greater variety in the own choice selections - 3 English Heritages, two Paganninis. Pity. Glenn McGowan --
