The argument against playing music which (to over simplify) has a tune rather than millions of notes is normally that it doesn't provide the technical challenge needed to win an own choice contest - and let's face it, we all want to win, don't we? In practise the truth of this statement depends what sort of company you're keeping - it's going to be different for a local association contest than for a national championship, for example. IMHO there are two ways to address this problem. The first would be to have a clear guide on what factors the adjudicator will be marking you at the outset - this would include technique but also musicality, for example. Bands could then choose their "test" piece with those points in mind, and the band that achieved the most notes per second, or loudest of the day might lose out on marks for musicality, etc. And secondly, how about some clear guidelines on which category different pieces fall into - for example I know that our local association (SCABA) used to publish a list of music and the section each piece was appropriate to, e.g. Harmony Music - Championship, London Overture - First. Then the adjudicator would have to judge the performance and not think "This performance was virtually note perfect but band x played a much harder piece, although there were quite a few slips - how do I score?" An alternative to the above, and an option that would probably involve less admin, would be for contest organisers to follow the lead of the European Championships and give bands a selection of, say, 10-15 pieces from which bands could choose. The trouble is that whatever you do there can only be one winner on the day leaving everyone else moaning about the system, the adjudicator, etc. Oh well... David Cooper KM Gillingham Band --
