Or what about this - somebody would have to refine this, but the basic idea
would be to categorise pieces. Each category (let's assume three categories)
receives a multiplier. Easy x 1. Medium x 1.25, Difficult x 1.5. (Don't forget I
mentioned refinement needed).

Marks are given for whatever piece you play and the multiplier is applied.
Therefore a difficult piece played badly would lose to an easy piece played very
well.

Having said that of course - somebosy has to do the ojb of categorising all the
pieces - and how on earth do you do that??
