Phil, Ewan, Thanks for the very interesting comments about Nick, James, the mainstream banding activity, I amend first the IMHO crucial parts of your earlier mails, just not to loose people joining the debate, and insert my humble opinion afterwards. My opinion: Although I grew up with mainstream banding for the last 20 years and listening/talking/... to the big names, I must admit James Watson is right about opening the band scene to the "outside-world". We should indeed prevent brassband kills it self by sticking to its "traditions". The only (fundamental) problem with it is James threw away, for some people even totally destroyed, what had been built over the past decades before he came in. Dyke had always set the musical standards from the Shepherd-McCann-Webster era, and that he surely altered totally. E.g. one can not say Baker is in line with the former 3 names. So its not a surprise Phil is right when he says nobody knows about the names of the Dyke players, why should we care about them? Not that they arent good players, far off, but... Also I wouldnt be to sure not to "go backwards thinking to the 80s". If a band can achieve tomorrow the Dyke 80s sound model, theyll be the best in the world without any doubt. Or does one think 1985 are the middle ages, its only 15 years ago. If Ewan talks about titles, he shouldnt only look to the nationals, but include the Open, European, concerts, recordings,... and then its clear Dyke with mainly David King did not have a "gap" at all. Phil says "Nick's challenge is to get the band playing to the exceptionally high standard that the band had at it's greatest time". Now thats really a killer for me: great, but why doesnt he take this opportunity on with Fodens, why doesnt he try to make Fodens the Dyke of the 80s? Is it impossible because of the Fodens players, committee or whatever reason, and/or has he a better chance with the current Dyke? I do not believe Dyke has an Alan on sop so ...? I dont think Dykes bass line is better then at Fodens, and so on. Well of course he can take the best ones with him, and rumors then go some would follow him? Why are you taking this so lighthearted Phil? :-) Why doesnt Nick or somebody else give a clear message about the reasons behind it all, now one may be producing nothing but false stories because of dead silence, and it does not improve our image. Even the Foden's site is very very quiet. One off us? (BIIIIIG laugh) I am not earning a couple of 10.000 a year with banding! Cheers, Edal -- njh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The list is bought to you with help from Normans Musical Instruments, http://www.normans.co.uk
