Hi, Aidan!
As a cornetist who is also a symphony trumpet player (we do that alot over
here in the US -- a very small fraction of cornettists are exclusively
cornet players), I see that most of the symphonic players here use Bach C
cup mouthpieces, with a rim diameter of size 5 or larger (in Chicago, the
Bach 1 mouthpiece is very common, with the 1 1/2 and 1C close behind).
Of course, the mouthpiece size depends entirely on the player, and many of
us prefer the deeper cups for that big "Chicago sound", and there are many
competing mouthpiece manufacturers to further complicate making
recommendations. If you were a tenor horn player, your rim size is likely
to be in the larger trumpet rim range, like the Bach 1 or the Schilke/Yamaha
20 range. Dennis Wick makes a 1 rim (similar to the Bach sizing convention)
that you might want to try.
My best advise is take a mate with you to a shop and try a bunch of
mouthpieces in the size range that you are already comfortable with. Have
your mate listen to you and give you feedback.
Good luck to you (and your neighbors!!!!)
