John,

I stand corrected re the Yamaha compensating system.  I just went to their
website to check it out.  That just goes to show you that you shouldn't
believe everything you hear.

As far as the valve problem goes, I sent my horn to Ron Partch, a brass
specialist in Toronto (one of the best around, I might add).  He did some
work on the valves and they seem to be fine now as long as I use a good
quality heavy oil.

He also "ported" the valves (I think that's the term) and I can hardly
believe it's the same horn.  Some of the stuffy notes I had before are gone.
