Stef, sorry I did not make myself clear. I meant to say that in the earlier days
of brass banding and right up to the 70s, excessive vib was common. Certainly
some of it was for aesthetic reasons but I suspect at least some was to cover up
problems in tuning. I agree with you that it should be used as required by the
music but certainly current brass band trends show that most top players feel it
should be used a whole lot less than used to be the case.
