As a new percussionist in our band (and indeed to banding), I have the
view that it is indeed more sensible for the equipment to be allowed to
be moved to wherever the bands percussionists require rather than be in
fixed positions.

In my limited experience, I have found that you need to be comfortable
with the positioning, especially if there are more than one
percussionist playing different instruments throughout a piece,
especially if like me (and two others in our band!!) you are not a very
experienced percussionist and you need to concentrate more on the music
rather than where you have to be on the stage for a certain section.
