Both the variations you mention have pros and cons. The key IMHO is to be
able to adopt a variety of approaches (what works for one person doesn't
necessarily work for another). No doubt you will be given a lot of theories
and opinions, but the one that is correct is the one that works convincingly
for you. (remember though that is no such speed or tempo marking as 'just
between my single and double/triple tonguing!!')
