[Date Prev][Date Next][Thread Prev][Thread Next][Date Index][Thread Index] Triple Tonging
In reply to the questions on triple tonging it is my opinion that both TKT &
TTK are valid ways of tripling.
I was originally taught TKT and have always favoured that method even though
most tutor books including the Arban advocate TTK. The difference between
them is negligible and anyone who says that it isn`t is incorrect.
The only problem I have ever had was when tripling arpeggios with the middle
note of the three one harmonic higher than the outer 2, for example: 3rd
space C, 4th space E, 3rd space C. This meant that the weaker articulation
(the K) was a different pitch. I encountered this problem playing the solo
`The Amazing Mr. Arban` and in particular the exercise in the Arban No.71
page 172, and solved it by learning to play the alternative way of TTK and
using that method for this passage and similar ones. I still however
naturally favour TKT and continue to use it for all other types of tripling.
I have no doubt that some passages will be the other way round and will be
very slightly easier on TKT than TTK so I suppose the complete answer is to
be able to play both methods.
The TKT way of tripling is featured on my technique video and describes some
ways of starting out.
In the end you should use the method that is most comfortable and most
effective as you will naturally always favour one, most probably the method
first learnt and in any case I will defy anyone to be able to tell
distinctly between the two played smoothly and at speed. It is like many
other aspects of brass playing, what suits me the best may not suit you and
vice versa, so try both and then concentrate on the one you feel most at
ease with.
Good luck
