Martin, I don't know whether this will help, but I sometimes have a lesson
with a freelance trumpet player called Paul Mayes. He is a brilliant player
and often plays for the RPO etc. He tells me that you should be able to do
both and that you should also be able to overlap with single tonguing and
change from one to the other seamlessly. He demonstrated it but I can't do
it. If you're not going to play professionally I don't think it matters.
I seem to remeber Gordon Higginbottom telling me that he could teach anyone
to triple tongue in ten minutes by getting them to say 'aTtacK a Tank' over
and over and faster and faster. It seemed to work quite well until I put the
mouthpiece to my lips!!!
Just do whatever is easiest and most natural for you.
