There is a website for Jan de Haan at
http://www.mgwalchwil.ch/seiten/magazin/2000_01/jadehaan.htm. This gives a
photo and a brief description of his life and musical career so far. It's
in German, though! If you are unable to translate it try going to
www.copernic.com where you can download a free multi-search engine and
translator. (That's how I found the site).
Regarding "Oregon", it's in our pads at present and we've played it two or
three times in public so far. The conductor's notes in the score, as far as
I can remember, describe the piece as a musical description of the pioneers'
journey West across the USA in the 19th Century. It has various themes in
the "Big Country" style, including a Red Indian section. It's very good to
listen to and great fun to play. There are features for all the band
sections but no solos as far as I can remember. Probably Grade 3/4.
I could give you much better information if I had the score with me. Mail
me if you want me to bring it home from the band on Wednesday.
