Surprised at the lack of proper answers to this query so far.

Valved trombones are not allowed at contests. (Rule 4 of the Scottish Amateur
Brass Band Association contest rules, and these are smilar to the English
rules I believe).  Incidently the same rule prohibits Eb and Bb Trumpets.

You might get away with it at Spennymoor, and possibly other
entertainment/programme contests where rules on instrumentation are more
relaxed, but no chance with a 'test piece' contest.
