Contest pieces

Dear list,

Just a few thoughts I'd like to share with you.

I strongly suspect that the adjudicators for this year's areas are going to
have to be stout, unimaginative souls. Otherwise, there are likely to be
rivers of blood pouring out of the adjudicator's box in the 2nd section.
Having played through the test piece "The Moor Of Venice" I think the
suicide rate is going to go sky high!

Last year, the 3rd section area piece was "Narnia Suite" by Geoffrey Burgon.
It was a delightful piece, really musical and pleasant, but with some
difficult and testing bits. In this case we have what must be one of the
most miserable and depressing pieces I have heard in a long while. Having
said that, it is a good piece of music and there are some very difficult
technical passages. However I don't envy the poor chaps who will have to
listen to it 24 or 25 times in a row. I'm glad it won't be me, 'cos I never
really took to Shakespeare anyway!

Does the committee who chooses the music suffer from some kind of manic
depression, or schizophrenia, do you think? From the delightful "Narnia", to
the zany but not altogether musical "Excelsior" for the Nationals, to the
musical but deathly "Moor of Venice" - extremes in every direction.

If we maintain our current progress, and either stay in the 2nd section or
move up can we expect the music to become less musical or more? That
question is aimed at you stars in the championship bands. What do you find?

I think we ought to prepare for this test piece by clubbing together for a
benevolent fund to help the poor, depressed adjudicators when they are
finally released from the box. They'll definitely need some liquid
anaesthetic, (mind you, I think I'll need some and I'll only play it once!)

Yours,
