Like Graham said. Make a field (database) or column (spreadsheet) for each piece of information you'd ever want to use as a sort function. I've got Title, Composer, Arranger, Genre, Original Genre, Publisher, library number, cost, and a notes area for special info. One caution. When using a spreadsheet is possible to sort part of a record WITHOUT sorting all its related information and then you could have a worthless SCRAMBLE of unrelated information that is IMPOSSIBLE to restore. (barring a locked backup copy or one burnt onto a CD-an absolute must in any case!) Databases don't allow that to happen because they are designed to link all the information in one record to each other permanently.DBs also allow you to set up standardized input information for things like genre so that the librarian(s) can only enter from a specified list which makes searching much more accurate. (If someone misspells orchestral or sometimes enters symphonic instead of orchestral it can really hinder a search) --
